Announcements May 18, 2020
Hi Parents, Ms. Shelton sent out 4th quarter grades guidelines today and we also explained it to the students on Google Meet. Students who did not do any 4th quarter work or did not do the majority of it will see F's on Apsen and on their progress report. The F is a result of us putting in a missing grade for work that was not completed. However, the final 4th quarter grade will not be a F. Students can still complete 4th quarter work without late penalties. Here is the information that was sent out by Ms. Shelton: 1. Our staff is committed to supporting your family through this time and that includes working to ensure your child’s success. We recognize that remote learning in the midst of a pandemic is challenging. Please be proactive and communicate with your child’s teacher if the workload is overwhelming so appropriate adjustments can be made, including assignment extensions and/or being excused from specific assignments. This way the student can still earn a grade equivalent to 3rd quarter instead of pass or fail. 2. Individual assignments can still be assigned an F grade, but No Student will receive an F as a final grade. With that said, we do feel it’s important to be transparent and honest in our feedback on individual assignments and that includes communicating when students fail to meet the standard. Also, if an assignment is missing, it will be indicated as such (MSG). This will provide you a realistic understanding of where they are at prior to the end of the quarter. At that time, we will defer to the guidelines, as communicated by CPS. 3. Students who are actively engaged, completing assignments and whose grades are trending to a grade the same as third quarter or higher will receive that grade. 4. Students will not receive a grade for just showing up to a virtual learning lesson. Sometimes those times do not work for all families and it is not equitable to give students a "grade" that could benefit their overall grade and the student who can't attend doesn't have the same opportunity to engage. The benefit of attending is experiencing real time learning, seeing their classmates and teachers, and also being able to ask questions for better clarification. 5. If your child's grade is trending lower, that grade will be overridden to P for pass and NOT be averaged for a final grade. Only final grades are placed on a transcript. 6. If a student's grade is trending toward a failing grade they will be given an Incomplete. Again, an incomplete will NOT be averaged into a final grade. 7. Students will not receive any penalty for a late assignment. 8. Our teachers are well aware of the stressful conditions and are taking these into account when determining assignments and grades. 9. Students who are unable to engage digitally can pick up a packet of work from the school. This packet must be submitted by the end of the quarter in order for the student to receive a letter grade, a pass, or an incomplete. CPS requires volunteers to complete and online application.
